Yorkshire hit by £40m spending cut

1 07 2010

New Start Magazine reports that regional development agency Yorkshire Forward is cutting £40.27m in funding for projects and initiatives.

Yorkshire Forward originally expected the schemes to create more than 7,000 jobs and nearly 1,600 new businesses.

Among the spending that is being axed:

  • a £1.4m skills scheme to support the workforces of manufacturing businesses facing redundancies
  • £200,000 earmarked for the food and drinks industry
  • a £1.3m scheme involving relocation costs and design work associated with the Huddersfield Waterside development has been delayed
  • the redevelopment of the historic Scarborough Spa is likely to see £800,000 of funding affected

Yorkshire Forward is not without its critics, but there are fears over the impact of the cuts on unemployment in the region.
